I’m not a baseball person but I happen to know that the Chicago Cubs baseball team is possibly the worst team to be a fan of because they rarely ever win. Anything. And yet, you will find diehard Chicago Cubs fans that can tell you every stat about their team since it was conceived. These fans seem like gluttons for punishment. I see them as people who have made a choice to love their team through thick and thin, for better or, usually, for worse. They may not like the outcomes, the choices made by the owner, coaches, staff or players but they choose to remain fans anyway. These fans are showing their Chicago Cubs team unconditional love.
Jesus is a diehard fan.
When Jesus came on this earth, his primary mission was to die on a crossbeam of wood to take the punishment of death that that every sinner would receive so that those who accepted his payment on their behalf would be forgiven of their sins and be given eternal life. He chose to die because of his unconditional love for you.
For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in him [Jesus] should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him [Jesus]. – John 3:16-17
The meaning of the phrase “the world” is every person in the world. It’s not complicated. God has chosen to be a diehard fan of you. Not because of your win/loss record. Not because of your financial success. Not because of your looks or future profitability or talent. Not because He pities you. God chooses you because He does. We may never understand the reason.
So, the next time you start doubting whether God knows your name or even cares about you at all, think of the Chicago Cubs fans. God knows you (and I) are a hot mess. He knows that we are more likely to screw something up than do it like He asks us to. God also knows what you did or didn’t do last summer…and He’s still your number one fan!
